Direct vent and vent-free (also called ventless or unvented) are the two dominant options, and they work very differently. Choosing the wrong type for your situation can mean installation headaches, safety concerns, or a fireplace that doesn't perform the way you expected.

How Each System Works
Direct Vent
A direct vent fireplace uses a sealed combustion system. It draws air for combustion from outside the home through one pipe, and exhausts combustion gases back outside through a second pipe (or a coaxial pipe-within-a-pipe system). The firebox is completely sealed from the room's air.
This means:
- All combustion byproducts (including CO) go outside
- No indoor air quality impact
- No chimney required — just a vent pipe through an exterior wall or roof
- Works in tightly sealed, energy-efficient homes
Vent-Free (Ventless)
A vent-free fireplace burns gas so efficiently that it produces minimal combustion byproducts — primarily water vapor and CO2 — which are released directly into the room. There is no vent pipe at all.
All vent-free units are required by law to include an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) that automatically shuts off the unit if oxygen levels in the room drop too low.

- They should not be used as a primary heat source for extended periods
- They are not recommended for bedrooms, bathrooms, or small, poorly ventilated spaces
- They add moisture to the air, which can cause condensation and mold issues in tight homes
- They are banned in California and some other jurisdictions
- The ODS is a safety device, not a guarantee — it shuts off the unit when oxygen drops, but by that point, CO levels may already be elevated
Our recommendation: For Northeast Ohio homes, we generally recommend direct vent fireplaces for primary installations. Vent-free units can be appropriate for supplemental heating in well-ventilated spaces, but we always discuss the specific application before recommending one.
Efficiency and Heat Output
Vent-free fireplaces win on paper efficiency — up to 99.9% of the fuel's energy becomes heat in the room. Direct vent units are typically 70–85% efficient.
However, this comparison is somewhat misleading. Direct vent fireplaces can be used for longer periods and in more situations without concern. And the moisture added by vent-free units can actually increase your cooling load in summer if the unit is used year-round.
For practical heating purposes, both types can effectively heat a room of 500–1,000 sq ft.
Installation Considerations
Direct vent requires running a vent pipe to an exterior wall or through the roof. This adds to installation cost and limits placement options somewhat — you need to be within a reasonable distance of an exterior wall. However, direct vent pipes can run horizontally (through a wall) or vertically (through the roof), giving you more flexibility than a traditional chimney.
Vent-free can be installed virtually anywhere — interior walls, rooms without exterior access, even closets (with proper clearances). This makes it the most flexible option for difficult installations.
