Gas Log Remote-Control Systems

Remote controls, wall switches, and thermostats allow you to operate your gas log set without reaching for the manual valve. OGF installs and programs remote-control systems for millivolt and IPI gas log sets throughout Northeast Ohio.

Types of Gas Log Controls

Wall Switch

The simplest upgrade from a manual valve. A wall switch wires to the thermopile output on a millivolt system and provides on/off control from a standard switch location. No batteries or receiver required.

ON/OFF Remote

A handheld remote with a receiver that mounts near the fireplace. Provides on/off control from anywhere in the room. Compatible with most millivolt systems.

Thermostatic Remote

A remote with a built-in thermostat that cycles the fireplace on and off to maintain a set room temperature. More convenient than an on/off remote for extended use.

Smart / App-Based Control

Wi-Fi or Bluetooth receivers that connect to a smartphone app or smart-home platform (Google Home, Amazon Alexa). Typically requires an IPI system or a compatible millivolt receiver.

Compatibility: Millivolt vs. IPI

Most remote-control systems are designed for millivolt (standing-pilot) gas log sets. The remote receiver connects to the thermopile output and interrupts the circuit to open and close the gas valve. A healthy thermopile producing at least 300mV is required for reliable remote operation.

IPI systems have their own electronic control module that may include a built-in receiver for a proprietary remote. Some IPI systems also accept third-party receivers. OGF confirms compatibility before installing any remote system.

Remote Installation and Programming

OGF installs and programs remote-control systems for gas log sets and gas fireplaces. We also diagnose and repair existing remote systems — common issues include dead receiver batteries, failed receiver modules, and thermopile output too low to power the receiver reliably.

Common Questions

Can I add a remote to my existing gas log set?

In most cases, yes — if your set has a millivolt system with a functioning thermopile producing adequate voltage. OGF tests your thermopile output and recommends a compatible receiver and remote.

My remote stopped working — what should I check?

Start with fresh batteries in both the remote and receiver. If that doesn't help, test thermopile output — a weak thermopile is a common cause of remote receiver failure. OGF can diagnose the issue in a single visit.

Can I control my gas fireplace with Alexa or Google Home?

Yes, with a compatible smart receiver. OGF installs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth receivers that integrate with major smart-home platforms. Compatibility depends on your existing ignition system.
