IPI Gas Log Systems
Intermittent Pilot Ignition (IPI) systems use an electronic spark to light the pilot only when the fireplace is turned on — eliminating the standing pilot flame and reducing gas consumption when the fireplace is not in use.
What Is an IPI System?
IPI stands for Intermittent Pilot Ignition. Unlike a millivolt (standing-pilot) system, an IPI system has no continuously burning pilot flame. When you turn on the fireplace — via wall switch, remote, or thermostat — the control module sends an electronic spark to ignite the pilot, which then lights the main burner. When you turn the fireplace off, the pilot extinguishes.
IPI systems require a small amount of AC power (typically 120V) or battery backup to operate the control module and igniter. Most modern IPI systems include a battery backup so the fireplace continues to work during a power outage.
Because the pilot only burns when the fireplace is in use, IPI systems consume less gas than millivolt systems over the course of a heating season. The tradeoff is added electronic complexity — the control module, igniter, and wiring are additional components that can fail.
IPI vs. Millivolt
IPI Advantages
- No standing pilot — lower gas consumption when fireplace is off
- Compatible with thermostats and smart-home systems
- Most include battery backup for power-outage operation
- Cleaner operation — no continuous combustion when not in use
IPI Limitations
- More electronic components — more potential failure points
- Control module replacement is more expensive than millivolt valve repair
- Requires power source (AC or battery) to operate
- Slightly longer ignition sequence than a standing-pilot system
IPI System Diagnosis and Repair
OGF's technicians diagnose and repair IPI systems from Real Fyre, Empire, Napoleon, and other manufacturers. Common IPI failures include control module faults, igniter electrode fouling, wiring harness issues, and gas valve problems.
When an IPI system fails to ignite, the root cause is often the control module or igniter — not the gas valve. OGF carries common replacement modules and igniters for same-visit repair on most systems.
Common Questions
Will my IPI fireplace work during a power outage?
Most IPI systems include a battery backup (typically 4 D-cell batteries) that allows the fireplace to operate when AC power is unavailable. Check your owner's manual or call OGF to confirm your system's backup capability.
My IPI fireplace won't ignite — what should I check?
First, confirm the battery backup is charged (replace batteries if in doubt). Check that the gas supply valve is open. If the system attempts to ignite (you hear clicking) but the pilot doesn't light, the igniter electrode may be fouled or the gas pressure may be low. Call OGF for a diagnosis.
Can I convert my millivolt fireplace to IPI?
In some cases, yes — conversion kits are available for certain fireplace models. OGF can assess your system and advise whether a conversion is practical and cost-effective.
IPI System Not Working?
OGF diagnoses and repairs IPI systems from Real Fyre, Empire, Napoleon, and other manufacturers. Same-visit repair on most systems.
