Vented Gas Logs

Vented gas log sets burn with the fireplace damper open, exhausting combustion gases up the chimney. They produce the most realistic flame appearance of any gas log type — and OGF installs and services them throughout Northeast Ohio.

What Are Vented Gas Logs?

Vented gas logs are designed to operate with the fireplace damper fully open. Combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — exhaust up the chimney flue, just as they would with a wood fire. This open-flue design allows manufacturers to tune the burner for maximum flame realism: tall, dancing flames with yellow and orange tips that closely mimic a wood fire.

Because the damper stays open, a significant portion of the heat produced escapes up the chimney. Vented gas logs are primarily chosen for their appearance rather than heating efficiency. If your goal is to heat a room, a vent-free system or a gas fireplace insert will perform better.

Vented sets require a working chimney flue in good condition. Before installation, OGF inspects the firebox and flue to confirm the system is safe to operate.

Pros and Cons

Advantages

  • Most realistic flame appearance of any gas log type
  • No firebox size restrictions (unlike vent-free)
  • No oxygen depletion concerns — combustion gases exhaust outside
  • Compatible with most masonry and factory-built fireplaces
  • Available in a wide range of log styles and sizes

Limitations

  • Lower heating efficiency — most heat exits through the flue
  • Requires a working chimney flue in good condition
  • Damper must remain open during operation
  • Not suitable for fireplaces without a functional flue

Vented Gas Log Installation in Northeast Ohio

OGF installs vented gas log sets in masonry fireplaces, factory-built (zero-clearance) fireplaces, and fireplace inserts throughout Cuyahoga, Lorain, Lake, Summit, and Medina counties. Our technicians assess your firebox dimensions, gas supply, and flue condition before recommending a set.

Installation includes connecting the burner to your gas line, positioning the log media, testing for leaks, and verifying proper draft. We also confirm the damper clamp (required by code for vent-free systems) is not present, since vented sets must operate with the damper fully open.

Common Questions

Can I install vented gas logs in any fireplace?

Vented gas logs require a working chimney flue. Most masonry fireplaces and factory-built fireplaces with functional flues are compatible. OGF inspects your fireplace before installation to confirm suitability.

Do vented gas logs heat a room?

Vented gas logs produce heat, but because the damper stays open, a significant portion escapes up the chimney. They are primarily chosen for their realistic flame appearance rather than heating efficiency.

What is the difference between vented and vent-free gas logs?

Vented logs require an open damper and exhaust combustion gases up the chimney. Vent-free logs burn with the damper closed and release heat into the room, but require a correctly sized firebox and an ODS safety sensor.
